Your head is probably safe into a 4 ohm load. to put this in laymens terms, imagine this.....with an amp that puts out a lower number load into a speaker cab thats a higher number, its like running a small stream of water through a wide hose. However, if the amp has a higher number load than the speaker cab, then its like trying to squeeze a heavy stream of water through a straw, and it puts a massive strain on the amp.

Therefore, if your head has a lower number OHM than your cab, your not getting full use of your power, and if you turn it up, then it will sound like its really struggling, and it will be very messy and broken up sounding, but it wont hurt your head. On the other hand, It is very dangerous though if you run a higher OHM rating into a lower rated Cab and you can really mess up your amp if you turn it up. If you look on the back of your head, it probably says something like "max load 4 ohms". What that means is dont plug it into a 2 ohm cabinet, but you can plug it into a 4 ohm, 8 ohm, or 16 ohm cab.

what I would suggest is re-wiring your cab into a lower OHM rating. Right now, you probably have 4/4ohm speakers wired in series to make 16 ohms; or you may have 4/16ohm speakers wired in series/parallel to make 16 ohms.

If the speakers are all 4ohm, then re-wire it into series/parallel to make it a 4ohm cab. If the speakers are all 16 oh, then re-wire it into parallel to make it a 4 ohm cab.

do a google search for "speaker wiring" and you will find dozens of tutorials and formulas for doing this. The concept is the same no matter what the speakers are being used for.
